Licence to Think Critically: Research-Based Legal Education

20.05.2026 09:15 - 10:45

Calonia 2107, Faculty of Law, University of Turku

This scientific session within EC2U—organised by the Faculty of Law, University of Turku—explores
how research-based legal education advances SDG 16 (Peace, Justice & Strong Institutions) and the EC2U Forum theme, Shaping European Futures through Quality Education. The Faculty of Law, guided by its motto Licence to Think Critically, approaches law as a deeply social, political, and cultural institution. This perspective is crystallised in the Faculty’s four focal areas of research—Democratic Digital Futures; Just & Sustainable Economies; Democracy & Constitutionalism; Power & Justice—which together frame its contribution to building resilient, equitable, and democratic futures. The session introduces these focal areas of research and concludes with a panel discussion featuring academic and student perspectives, illustrating how research-grounded learning can strengthen peace, justice, and strong institutions.
