Workshop

Improve your presentation and poster skills

February 13, 2025

This workshop is designed to help students improve their presentation and poster skills. The workshop will consist of two sessions.

The first session will be in the morning to work on presentation skills with Bridget Palmer. This session can be attended online, although we recommend to participate in person to get the most out of this session.
The second session takes place in the afternoon to improve your poster with Andreas Dahlin. This session can only be attended in person.

It is possible to participate in both sessions or choose only one.

Workshop registration will open on January 1, 2025. Stay tuned!

Please note that the workshop registration is separate from the registration for the symposium itself! If you want to participate in the workshop as well as the symposium, please make sure you fill out both registration forms.

Session 1: Presentation skills with Bridget Palmer

This workshop is designed to help AURA Symposium presenters develop and refine their presentation skills to effectively communicate their research to both expert and non-expert audiences. Through guided practice, participants will focus on:

  • Crafting compelling academic introductions and personal pitches
  • Designing clear and engaging PowerPoint slides
  • Improving nonverbal communication techniques
  • Structuring presentations for clarity and impact

Participants will practice delivering short sections of their presentations during the workshop, receiving feedback to build confidence and improve their delivery. The primary goal of the workshop is to equip participants with the tools and strategies needed to effectively engage diverse audiences and convey their research with clarity and professionalism at the AURA Symposium.

Bridget Palmer is a University Teacher of English at the Centre for Language and Communication Studies at the University of Turku, where she teaches courses on Academic English, English for STEM, Intercultural Communication, and Academic Presentation Skills.

Session 2: Poster skills with Andreas Dahlin

We all do excellent research that deserves to be presented in the best possible way. We are all good at writing and talking about our findings, but what about making diagrams, illustrations, and result charts? Using clear, crisp, and pedagogic images is one of the most powerful methods of explaining your research.

The workshop aims to teach you how to create an attractive, credible scientific poster. It is a theoretical and practical workshop where we will discuss how to make an effective poster. You will dissect a set of posters with your newly acquired skills, get feedback on your poster in progress, and also get some poster power tips that you cannot find online.

It is a visuals-only workshop, meaning that we won’t be talking about how to write effectively or present the poster orally.

Andreas Dahlin is an adjunct associate professor in analytical chemistry from Uppsala University, Sweden. He has always been interested in visualizing his and his colleagues’ research. In 2011, Andreas started a PhD course at Uppsala University called “Visualize your Science.”

The course quickly became very popular. At the beginning of 2016, Andreas decided to focus entirely on helping researchers create better images, and he quit his research career to start the company Visualize your Science AB. There are now seven teachers in the company, and last year, more than 700 researchers, mainly in the Nordic countries, attended the course.
