Xadreque brings BISONS to the Green Skills Symposium 2026 in Nairobi
Xadreque Macuácua, PhD candidate at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM) and researcher affiliated with BISONS, was selected to participate in the Green Skills Symposium 2026, organized by the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The event was held in Nairobi, Kenya, from 11 to 13 February 2026, bringing together professionals, researchers, policymakers, and innovators committed to advancing sustainable solutions and strengthening green skills development.
During the event, he was invited to present his research on disaster risk governance in Mozambique, highlighting the importance of risk-informed governance, institutional capacity building, and inclusive frameworks to support climate resilience and sustainable development in vulnerable contexts. He was the only representative from Portuguese-speaking countries at the symposium, contributing a unique Lusophone perspective to the global dialogue on green transition pathways.
The symposium was a collaborative initiative led by the Royal Academy of Engineering in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP Kenya), Jacob’s Ladder Africa (Jacob’s Ladder Africa – JLA), and the Alliance for Greening Skills and Opportunities (AGSO). Under the theme “Accelerating the Green Transition through Skills and Innovation,” the event focused on equipping societies, particularly in the Global South, with the competencies required for a low-carbon and climate-resilient future. It served as a platform for co-designing locally grounded solutions, fostering collaboration among academia, industry, civil society, and government actors. Thematic areas included innovation and circular business models in sectors such as renewable energy and sustainable construction; validation of green skills in unregulated labor markets; and participatory approaches to ensure a just and inclusive transition.
The laboratory proudly celebrates his achievement, recognizing both his selection and his success in obtaining competitive international funding as important milestones in its commitment to research excellence and global impact!
