Major Funding Awarded to the Corporate Forest Project by the Kone Foundation
University Lecturer Hanna Malik and her research team have been awarded four-year Metsän puolella funding from the Kone Foundation. The grant, amounting to €399,000, has been awarded to the project Corporate Forest: Revealing Hidden Harms in Forest Regulation Through Computational and Posthuman Legal Analysis.
In addition to Malik, the research team includes University Teacher Juho Aalto and doctoral researchers Sonja Vilenius and Marjaana Sjölund.
Forest loss is not merely an ecological problem—it is also shaped by the ways in which forests are discussed, defined, and classified in laws and regulations. These frameworks influence which forms of harm become possible, permitted, or invisible.
The research project supports the objectives of the Kone Foundation’s Metsän puolella initiative by revealing hidden mechanisms shaping forest governance, strengthening legal practices that respect forests, and helping to prevent future harm.
We warmly thank the Kone Foundation for the funding and look forward to implementing our research plan!
