Traditionally, socio-legal research has relied on case studies, interviews, and qualitative analyses of legal and policy documents. Computational socio-legal studies, by contrast, draw on large-scale digital datasets and methods such as natural language processing (NLP), machine learning, text mining, and network analysis. These approaches make it possible to analyze thousands of documents simultaneously and to identify patterns that would be laborious or even impossible to detect through human reading alone.

Within the Corporate Forest project, computational socio-legal methods are applied particularly to the study of legislative processes. The aim is to understand how different actors participate in law-making, what kinds of arguments they employ, and how their views are reflected in the final legislation. Computational approaches make it possible, for example, to identify discursive coalitions and assess stakeholder influence across all Finnish forest law reform projects over multiple decades. At the same time, they enable the long-term analysis and comparison of legislative processes.

Computational socio-legal studies provide novel tools for investigating the societal dimensions of law. By combining legal scholarship, social science, and data science, they enable the systematic and reproducible analysis of large-scale legal datasets. This makes it possible to generate new knowledge about how legal meanings are constructed, how political and societal interests are reflected in legislative drafting, and what kinds of actors shape the development of law.

Computational Socio-Legal Studies combines socio-legal research questions with computational methods.
