The project is funded under the Committee for Cultural and Society Research.

Corporate Forest II examines how forest legislation and policy shape relationships between humans and nature in Finland. In particular, it focuses on how legal systems may unintentionally enable environmentally harmful practices while favouring industrial forest use. The project adopts an interdisciplinary approach, combining legal, ecological, and social scientific perspectives.

The research draws on a diverse range of materials, including interviews, archival sources, and legislative documents, complemented by computational text analysis. Empirically, the project investigates forest governance in regions such as Kouvola, Inari, Kajaani, and Suomussalmi.

The aim of the project is to generate new knowledge on the role of law in forest use and governance, and to support more equitable and sustainable futures for forests and all who depend on them.

In addition, the project engages actively with schools, civil society organisations, and artists. This collaboration seeks both to disseminate research findings and to envision alternative legal futures for forest governance.

Corporate Forest II further strengthens the University of Turku’s position as a leading centre for research on legal studies and societally impactful interdisciplinary research.

The Research Council of Finland has awarded funding to the Corporate Forest II research project led by Hanna Malik.
