Kimmo Laine, PhD, Docent, University of Turku
Kimmo Laine is a university lecturer in media studies at the University of Turku, specialized in the history of Finnish and Nordic cinema, particularly during the so-called studio era. He has published, for example, Finnish Film Studios (2022), a work on the history of Finnish film production, and has edited several works on film history. He previously worked as a research fellow at the Finnish Film Archive (now KAVI) and as a member of the editorial board of the Finnish National Filmography series.
Pietari Kääpä, Professor, University of Warwick
Pietari Kaapa is Professor in Media and Communications at the University of Warwick. He works in the field of environmental media studies with a focus on media management and production studies. He has published widely in the field of environmental media studies, including Transnational Ecocinemas (Intellect 2013), Ecology and Contemporary Nordic Cinemas (Bloomsbury, 2014), Environmental Management of the Media: Industry, Policy, Practice (Routledge 2018) and Film and Television Production in the Age of Climate Change (Palgrave 2022). He is PI of the AHRC Global Green Media Network, including several co-produced industry reports on sustainable film production management: www.globalgreenmedianetwork.org/reports
Noora Kallioniemi, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Turku
Previously a researcher at the National Audiovisual Institute of Finland, Noora Kallioniemi is a postdoctoral researcher in cultural history whose work explores the intersections of audiovisual media, ecology, and material culture. Her research also engages with animal and plant histories. As part of the project, Kallioniemi examines the ecohistorical dimensions of costumes, props, and set design through archival collections and film materials.
Silja Laine, PhD, Docent, University of Turku
Silja Laine is a cultural historian specializing in landscape studies, environmental humanities, and mobility studies, with a focus on representations of natural and built environments and the selection of filming locations.
Aymeric Pantet, PhD, TIES Senior Researcher, University of Turku
Aymeric Pantet holds a PhD in film studies from Université Paris Cité and has work at several universities in France and Finland. He is currently researching the impact of French cinema in Finland in the 1930s and 1940s from a transnational, ecocritical, and sociocultural perspective as an MSCA-TIES senior researcher (TIAS).
In this project, Pantet focuses on theoretical and methodological starting points on the one hand and energy consumption (electricity, oil) in film production on the other.
Tommi Römpötti, PhD, Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Turku
Tommi Römpötti is a film researcher specialized in both Finnish film history and contemporary Finnish cinema. He has also worked as a university lecturer of Media Studies at University of Turku. His particular areas of interest are youth film and road film. Römpötti has studied driving in films in his PhD thesis (2012, in Finnish) and in several articles, last in the article “Car culture as a sign of modernization in Finnish feature films in the 1950s and 1960s” (2022, in Finnish).
In this project, Römpötti focuses on ecological issues related to transportation, particularly car use, both in film production and in film representations.
Laura Saarenmaa, PhD, Docent, University of Turku
Laura Saarenmaa is a university lecturer in media studies at the University of Turku. She has published broadly on the interconnections of politics and popular media. Her latest work explores the culture and art programming in the Finnish public service television from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s, particularly focusing on the extensive selection of feature films from various language areas, cultures and nationalities.
Hebe Ronkainen, M.A., Doctoral Researcher, University of Turku
Hebe Ronkainen is a doctoral researcher at the University of Turku. In their master’s thesis (2023) Ronkainen examined media studies students’ climate affects. Ronkainen has previously worked as a research assistant in the multidisciplinary Climate Nudge project. Their fields of expertise include mediated climate experiences and the environmental impacts of digital media.
In the SEE project their work includes charting archival materials and relevant literature, as well as coauthoring research articles.
