NEW RESEARCH: Strengthening Maternal Pertussis Vaccination Through Better Surveillance

How can surveillance systems help shape effective maternal vaccination programmes across Europe? Latest research explores the introduction and evolution of maternal pertussis vaccination across seven European countries: England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.

The study concluded that:

  • Differences in surveillance systems and decision-making influenced when and how countries introduced maternal pertussis vaccination.
  • Outbreaks and unexpected circumstances played an important role in shaping vaccination policies.
  • Stronger surveillance and monitoring are essential to guide future maternal vaccination strategies.

Greater harmonisation of surveillance methods, improved vaccination uptake data, better understanding of public perceptions and inequalities, and enhanced training for healthcare professionals can help strengthen maternal vaccination programmes across Europe
