FinnGen

FinnGen is a joint public-private research project involving Finnish universities, hospital districts, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, the Blood Service, biobanks, FINBB, and several international pharmaceutical companies.

The FinnGen research project takes over 500,000 Finns on a journey of discovery into genomic data and future health innovations. Covering the entire country, this joint Finnish study aims to uncover significant findings that can be found in anyone’s sample and help people around the world.

FinnGen-support

The FinnGen support project of the University of Turku provides analysis support and training related to FinnGen data. The local analysis support person is trained by FinnGen and assists in the use of the dataset and in the planning and implementation of analyses. Please contact FinnGen Support for more information by sending an email to finngen-support@utu.fi or filling out the contact form.

The research project is based on exceptionally broad and open cooperation. FinnGen brings together Finnish universities and research institutes, biobanks, wellbeing services counties, and international pharmaceutical companies. This open cooperation enables the development of new treatments.

The University of Turku and the wellbeing services county are also involved in the FinnGen research project. In Turku, several researchers use the genetic and health data collected by FinnGen in their research. In particular, cardiovascular registry and genetics studies with FinnGen data have led to several publications and international collaborations.

FinnGen’s entire dataset is available to all researchers in all Finnish universities, university hospitals, wellbeing services counties, and biobanks participating in the research project. Phenotypic and genotype data is available and can be analyzed on over 500,000 people in FinnGen’s secure research environment. Access to this extensive genetic dataset provides a significant advantage for Finnish research groups in applying for research funding. Contact an analytics support person for more information.
