Moammar Dayoub


Moammar Dayoub works as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Department of Future Technologies that will be part of the new Faculty of Engineering at UTU in 2021. Moammar received his Ph.D. in Agricultural economics, and he has an impressive work history in scientific agricultural research in Syria. Moammar is interested in agricultural economics and rural development, including the adoption of new agricultural technology as well as impact assessment and feasibility in agriculture.

Moammar has noticed Finland’s expressed interest in climate change adaptation and climate variability and that it has stood out as a top country for information and communications technology (ICT).

“In Finland, ICT is considered an important theme for African partners, for instance, to develop innovative information society solutions. The University of Turku has implemented successful projects in the Global South by transferring knowledge, education, technologies and disseminated the Finnish experience in the world. I think this is what the world needs firstly and lastly.”

Indeed, Moammar is very pleased to give his experience for projects involved in the Global South and especially Africa. Currently, he is working on Mobile Climate Service project with his colleagues. The project has a focus on Tanzania and Namibia in Eastern Africa. The idea is to co-design mobile climate services applications with and for small-scale farmers.

Climate services involve the timely production, translation, and delivery of useful climate data, information, and knowledge for societal decision making. Moammar explains that there has been a lack of integration between meteorological services and local knowledge, and farmers cannot access critical data, timely forecasts, or up-to-date agricultural information.

“Our role is to involve the local people and stakeholders in the process of designing their climate services such as the mobile app and web platforms. This must be done with a participatory approach. High-level knowledge of climate services and acknowledging the co-design approach help to ensure that the results meet the users’ needs and are viable.”

For Moammar, Global South refers to a part of the world that is full of power and inspiration, but that has not yet had the chance to appear in the pretty figure. It is also a term that different policy and economic forces try to keep as a term of progress and industry, although the core of humanity is far from that.

Moammar Dayoub

Moammar Dayoub is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Future Technologies at the University of Turku. In 2013–2017, he served as the Head of Centre Salamieh for Scientific Agricultural Research in Syria. At the moment, his research activities focus on designing mobile climate services for small scale farmers in Africa. He is interested in embarking on a joint multidisciplinary project on this theme also in the future.

 

Minna-Liina Ojala

Minna-Liina Ojala is a doctoral student specializing in Lefebvrian rhythms and knowledge creation processes in different contexts. Her research concerns multicultural encounters and collaboration, mobility, and the role environment has in knowledge creation. She has conducted exchange studies, research and internship in Tanzania.
