RCF JuDiCe and AALAW’s collaboration resulted in the Article of the Year!
Åbo Akademi professor Elina Pirjatanniemi was asked to choose the UTU Faculty of Law’s Article of the Year 2023. The winner was revealed in the Faculty’s development day, and it is Miriam Tedeschi’s and Mika Viljanen’s Lost in Transduction: From Law and Code’s Intra-actions to the Right to Explanation in the European Data Protection Regulations published in Law and Critique by Springer. The work was the result of the collaboration between JuDiCe and AALAW projects, both funded by the Research Council of Finland (RCF).
Pirjatanniemi thanked the authors for an excellent scholarly contribution. She based her decision on the article’s skilful combination of theory and practice. It has a robust theoretical foundation and it aims to establish its own framework for a better understanding of the phenomenon it examines. “The article does not make it easy for readers, as it questions our usual ontological assumptions. It challenges our perceptions of the nature of the world and the relationships between things and objects. The article also challenges established categories, which may seem strange or even intimidating. However, if one embraces the article’s premises, it broadens and deepens the understanding of both the research subject and the law itself.”
Pirjatanniemi also thanked the faculty for the task that she found enjoyable, yet challenging. “Each article I read had its undeniable merits. Overall, the articles portray a future-oriented research community that boldly engages in international legal debate.”
