Implementation

The project is divided into three work packages (WPs):

WP1: Media consumption, risks and trust

In this package, we use population-level longitudinal surveys to examine how trust developed during the Covid-19 outbreak and how it was linked to citizens’ media consumption and risk perceptions at different stages of the crisis.

Data:
Digital age in Finland -longitudinal survey (2017,2019,2020,2021)
Covid-19 in Finland and USA – longitudinal survey (Spring 2020, Fall 2020)

WP2: Media framings, risks and trust

The second WP examines how different ways of framing a pandemic crisis affect individuals ’perceptions of risk and confidence by using survey experiments. We conduct vignette research that is a quasi-experimental setup evaluating the effect of various external conditions (ie. media framings) on people’s moral attitudes and emotions considering also the moderation effect of trust

Data:
The fourth wave of  digital age in Finland -longitudinal survey

WP3: Trust and citizen participation in the hybrid media

The third package shed light on the themes of previous work packages by examining the intersections between civic social media participation and news media production. In particular, we ask how trust, mistrust and changes in trust encourage citizens to take part in the social media debates related to the Covid pandemic at different times of the crisis
