Event: Can legal mobilisation change the world? 20 October 2025

The Finnish Academy of Science and Letters warmly welcomes you to the event Ilta tieteelle on Monday, 20 October 2025, from 17:15 to 19:00 at the House of Nobility (Ritarikatu 1, Helsinki) and online.

The keynote speaker of the event is MARCEN PI Daniela Alaattinoglu. Her keynote speech is titled Can legal mobilisation change the world?.

In her talk, Alaattinoglu explores how communities, movements, and individuals are increasingly using the law to reshape power relations — by taking cases to court, filing complaints, or running rights-based campaigns. These efforts, known as legal mobilisation, cut across the political spectrum and address urgent challenges, from defending basic rights to confronting the climate crisis.

Focusing on three cases of human rights mobilisation – abortion rights in Ireland, trans rights in Sweden and reproductive justice for Greenlandic women – this talk asks: What makes people and groups mobilise? What prompts public authorities to respond? And ultimately: can legal mobilisation change the world?

The event will be held in Finnish, while the keynote speech will be delivered in English.

Please register by 15 October here.

The event will be streamed live on Yle Areena and will also be available as a recording online afterwards.
