EMOTION Research Study

Welcome to the Emotion research study! Here, you will find information and instructions on how to take part in our study.

How do I participate?

Please follow all of the below steps in order to take part:

  1. Carefully read through the general description of the study and all the instructions
  2. Retrieve your participant ID (only once!)
  3. Open the Well-being Questionnaire I and read through the informed consent at the beginning of the form. If you agree with its terms, please proceed to fill out the rest of the questionnaire (approx. 20–30 min), measuring aspects of your well-being, sleep quality, as well as dream and daydream experiences
  4. The major part of the research consists of a daily mind-wandering task (approx. 15 min/day) and a daily dream log (approx. 10–15 min/day) during a two-week period. Instructions for this part of the study can be found here
  5. Finally, your last task is to fill out Well-Being Questionnaire II  (after you have completed your two weeks of mind-wandering and dream logs)

How Much Time It Takes to Participate in the Study

  • If you agree to take part in the study, we ask you to fill in the well-being questionnaires (I and II). This takes about 40-60 minutes in total.
  • Then, we ask you to keep a daily record of mind-wandering and dreams for two weeks. We estimate that this takes about 25-30 minutes per day in total (10-15 minutes in the morning to report dreams, and 15 minutes in the evening to report mind-wandering). You may find that writing the reports takes longer than the estimated 10-15 minutes. However, we recommend you spend no more than 30 minutes per task (dream report and mind- wandering report).
  • We estimate that, all in all, the study will take roughly 8 hours of your time.
  • Some people may find this process interesting and, if you wish to continue for longer, you are free to do so. However, we do not recommend that you participate for longer than four weeks (one month).
  • Some people may find that the time commitment of taking part in the study is more than they expected or circumstances make it difficult. You can stop taking part at any stage without having to give a reason.
