Regional variation in prescribing quality – Register study

We examine and compare regional variation in prescribing quality, costs and equity in medicine use across regions in Sweden and Finland using register data.

This study aims to describe and compare quality of prescribing, healthcare spending, and equality in medicine utilisation across regions in Finland and Sweden, as well as compare the regional variation across the two countries using register data between 2014-2022.

The study is based on individual-level, linked administrative register data sets encompassing the full populations in Finland and Sweden. Finnish and Swedish register studies are conducted separately, without combining individual-level data. Comparative analyses are conducted using methods relying on aggregate data.

The study was preregistered with the Open Science Framework on July 3, 2024: https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/TQ5SN
