Expedition to Svalbard

Arto Hiltunen participated in a research expedition from August 29 to September 11, 2024, which started in Longyearbyen (Svalbard, Norway) and ended in Gdańsk, Poland. During the expedition, water samples were collected for laboratory analysis to determine nanoplastic concentrations. The journey was conducted aboard the research vessel R/V Oceania of the Polish Academy of Sciences as part of the annual AREX (ARctic EXpedition) research program.

Longyearbyen was a small and charming village, perfect for a one-night stay before departure.

Seabirds accompanied us on the journey. In addition to gulls, puffins added cheer to the voyage. The edge of a glacier is visible in the background.
At times, we experienced some proper rough seas.
After rough seas, calm moments were appreciated
Along the way, we witnessed several stunning rainbows!
Samples were collected into measuring bottles as surface water samples.
