Arto Hiltunen (Doctor of Technology)

Arto Hiltunen studies the amount of nanoplastics in water.

In my current position, I develop methods for measuring nanoplastic pollution concentrations in various environments, particularly water samples. At the moment, we are analyzing water samples collected from the Archipelago Sea near Turku and the Arctic Ocean near Svalbard.

I have always considered environmental and climate issues important, which led me to study fossil-free energy production methods at Tampere University of Technology (now Tampere University). During my master’s studies, I specialized in solar cells and completed my thesis on polymer solar cells in collaboration with a chemistry laboratory. After graduating, I started as a doctoral researcher in the same laboratory. Modern solar cells are based on nanotechnology, so during my PhD work, I gained extensive expertise in nanotechnological applications, fabrication methods, measurement techniques, and theory. In my current work with nanoplastics, I apply the nanotechnology tools I learned in solar cell research to tackle issues related to nanoplastic pollution. Here’s a link to my University of Turku profile. For a complete list of my publications, I recommend visiting my Google Scholar page.

Jari Hänninen (PhD, Research Station Director)

The nanoplastics research is supported by a world-class understanding of the Finnish archipelago, oceans, and marine systems, provided by station director Jari Hänninen. His website can be found here.
