Digital Fundamental Care

Purpose

The Purpose of the project is to develop new innovations for the use of fundamental care. We are using the technology of Internet of Things (IoT), a novel paradigm where objects with unique identities can be integrated into an information network to provide intelligent services for health care. With embedded sensor systems and advanced data analytics and machine learning the heterogeneous data can be transformed into useful form for the caregivers.

Projects

SMART PAIN ASSESSMENT TOOL BASED ON IoT (SPA)

Sanna Salanterä

Pasi Liljeberhg, PhD, Professor, Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku

The purpose of the SPA project is to benefit from the offered features of the Internet of Things and sensor networks to provide an automatic tool which can detect and assess pain employing behavioral and physiologic indicators such as facial muscle activity, heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and galvanic skin response. The aim of this project is to develop a system based on Internet of Things to detect and assess pain in a reliable way by enabling the pain diagnoses in the case when the patient is unable to communicate and express the pain sensations.

AUTOMATIC BOWEL MOTILITY ASSESSMENT TOOL (ABMAT)

Sanna Salanterä

Pasi Liljeberhg, PhD, Professor, Department of Future Technologies, University of Turku

The purpose of the ABMAT-project is to develop an automated tool for assessment of bowel motility in critical care and postoperative patients. The aim of this project is to develop a system based on Internet of Things for real-time detection and analysation of abdominal sound to allow appropriate and timely care decisions.

THE STEP

Heljä Lundgrén-Laine, RN, MNSc, PhD, Chief Nursing Officer, Central Finland Health Care District

Fundamental care in nursing is one of the key aspects of the effectiveness of nursing, health promotion and prevention of illness. It is a universal element of the quality of nursing and closely connected to good patient satisfaction. There is still lack of common criteria of good quality basic fundamental care. The purpose of this project is to strengthen the implementation and evidence of good quality fundamental care in nursing combining:

  1. Evidence based assessment tools and quality management
  2. The basic skills of clinical nursing
  3. The decision making of nursing management
  4. The use of smart technology supporting good quality of fundamental care
