Basis of the research program

Phases

This research programme has its roots in early 1990s. It is closely connected with the teaching of philosophy of health care and nursing in the Department of Nursing Science. In the first phase, the research started with focus on patients and populations. In the later phases, research enlarged to also concern professionals, organisations, and society. Following main phases of the project have been implemented:

Phase IV: Evaluation of the realisation of the value basis 2010 –

In a current phase, the ethical evaluation has been continuing on the level of patients, and been broadened to nurses/health care professionals and on the level of organizations and society. Especially, the interest is the ethics of leadership, management and ethical environment.

In connection of this phase, two large international research projects have been made. COST Action (RANCARE) CA15208 concentrated to nursing care rationing and missed nursing care. In was funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union. RightTimePlaceCare was made in the field of older people nursing care and dementia patients. It was funded by 7th Framework Programme of the European Union (Grant agreement ID: 242153) in collaboration with eight European countries.

Phase III: Evaluation of the realisation of patients’ best and rights in different clinical fields 2002 – 2009

In this phase, new instruments for evaluation the realisation of patients’ best and rights have been created and tested.

Procedural_pain_care

Phase II: Ethical Codes in Nursing ECN 2002 – 2006

In this phase, an international comparative study was implemented in the field of ethical codes aiming to analyse the use and meaning of the codes to nurses in practice, in collaboration with eight European countries. This part was funded by the European Commission (4th Framework Programme).

Phase I: Patients’ autonomy, privacy and informed consent 1998 – 2002

In this phase, instruments for evaluating the realisation of patients’ autonomy, privacy and informed consent in nursing interventions were created and tested internationally, in collaboration between Germany (Humboldt University/Berlin), Scotland (University of Stirling), Spain (Hospital de Sant Pau/Barcelona) and Finland (University of Turku). This phase was funded by the European Commission (BioMed programme).
