Part 2: Reforming student selection in nursing education (2015-2021)

The aim is to develop, implement and evaluate a new selection method nationally.

Phase I: Definition stage (2015-2016)

The aim is to define the factors that should be assessed in the future on-site student selection in nursing education.

As the result of data synthesis of three literature reviews and three focus group reviews (n=27), three main parts of the new selection method were identified, namely, learning and social skills, and certainty of the career choice.

Phase II: Development stage (2016- 2019)

The aim was to develop a selection instrument for the new selection method. Research questions were:

  • What is the structure of the selection method?
  • What is the content of the selection method?
  • What is the reliability and validity selection method?
  • Is there a difference in the perception of nursing profession between the intervention and the control group?

As the result of the development stage, a new selection method was developed and piloted in the entrance exam of four UAS in autumn 2016. The new selection method was further developed, during the year 2017-2019, based on the results of the pilot study.

Phase III: Evaluation stage (2018-2021)

The aim is to assess validity and reliability of the new selection method. Research questions are:

  • What is the level of learning skills, social skills and certainty in the career choice of nursing applicants?
  • What factors are related to learning skills, social skills and certainty in the career choice?
  • What are the psychometric properties of the new selection method?

Longitudinal data will be collected (in years 2018-2021) to test the validity and reliability of the selection method.
