POLKU – Trough Active Readership to Communities of Readers

AUTUMN 2020

Step marks on reading (1 credit point)
The aim of the course is to describe a research-based view of the factors related to reading in early childhood education and basic education, the development of committed readers and the emergence of a reader community. The course includes one VESO-eligible, training day (6 h) and creative workshops (2 times 3-hour workshop) in a local peer group or online registrants. The learning of the course contents is supported by online material.

Journey to Readership and Communities of Readers (3 credit points)

During the course, the participant understand the factors influencing his or her own readership and the importance of his or her own readership in guiding the environment to reading. In addition, the course introduces the experiential significance of the community of readers and the pedagogical means of creating a reader’s community. The course concentrates on describing how to plan, guide and evaluate the culture of reading and on activities that support the readership including family reading activities. The course includes one VESO-eligible training day (6 h) and creative workshops (4 times 3-hour workshop) in a local peer group or online. Online materials and online assignments support learning.

SPRING 2021
Journey to Self and Community (3 credit points)
The aim of the course is to gain experience in both personal and communal experiential reading. During the course, the participant will gain experience in communicative meaning of learning, learn art-based methods for interpreting texts, and learn how to design, implement, and evaluate a teaching module based on experiential reading and dialogical meaning making. The course includes one VESO-eligible training day for all (6 h), as well as creative workshops (4 times 3-hour workshop) in a local peer group for local or online. Online materials and an online assignment support learning.

Journeys to Writing (3 credit points)
The aim of the course is to deepen reading experiences and commitment to reading through writing. The training introduces a variety of ways to support reading, such as R2L pedagogy, individual story ending, text dramatization, textual interventions, and creative writing methods. During the course, the participant will gain experience in reading by writing, learn more art-based methods for interpreting texts, and learn how to design, implement, and evaluate modules that emphasize the connection between reading and writing. The course includes one VESO-eligible training day for everyone (6 h) and creative work from the workshop countries (4 times 3-hour workshop) in a local peer group or online. Online materials and an online assignment support learning.

AUTUMN 2021
The road to reading is open! – Development project (5 credit points)

In the Development Project course, the student plans and implements a project in his or her own work community. The starting point is what has been learned and experienced during the study courses, as well as further developing the existing good practices in one’s own community. The goal is a permanent change. The course includes two VESO-eligible training days for everyone (6 h) and creative workshops (4 times 3-hour workshop) in a local peer group or online. The workshops are planned together with the participants study module in the spring and will take place in the autumn semester of 2021. On the latter training day, the POLKU-participants share the resulting practices. Learning is supported by online materials.
