Tick-borne Diseases (TBD) Turku
Welcome to TBD Turku, where cutting-edge research converges with a dedicated pursuit of unraveling the complexities surrounding tick-borne pathogens.
Our research activities focus on especially on the following topics
- tick biology and ecology, pathogen carriage in the ticks
- host animal species of ticks, and reservoir animal species of the tick-borne pathogens
- vector competence of different tick species, i.e. the capacity of the species to act as transmitters of infection
- various in vitro test setups with tick-borne pathogens
- animal experiments with tick-borne pathogens, including co-infections
- immunology of tick-borne infections in vitro and in vivo (mice, human samples)
- development of diagnostics for tick-borne infections (biomarkers, metabolomics, new antigens…)
- new antibiotics (for borreliosis)
- epidemiology and disease burden of emerging TBDs (neoehrlichiosis, anaplasmosis, babesiosis etc.) in Finland studied within the framework of Fintick consortium
