New Study Explores Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE) in Åland After Introduction of Vaccination Programme

New study examined tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) cases in Åland between 2006 and 2023 after the introduction of a vaccination programme. A total of 145 cases were identified, with most infections occurring in unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated individuals. While severe disease was more common in older patients and some breakthrough infections occurred, the incidence of TBE did not increase in Åland, unlike in neighbouring regions—likely due to vaccination efforts. Most patients recovered, with 86% considered clinically recovered at two-year follow-up.
