I am the professor of bacteriology at University of Turku, and also the chief physician in Clinical microbiology laboratory in Turku University Hospital, where my responsibility area is tick-borne diseases diagnostics. My research has focused on various aspects of Lyme borreliosis (LB) and other TBDs since 2003. I have supervised six doctoral thesis on these topics, and four projects are ongoing. 

My research interests are:  

  • Prevalence of ticks and TBD pathogens in Finland 
  • Epidemiology of TBDs in Finland 
  • Pathogenesis of LB using in vitro and in vivo models 
  • Immunology of LB in animal models and in humans 
  • Development novel laboratory diagnostic tools for TBDs (serology based on novel antigens; metabolomics, sc RNA seq) 
  • Antibiotic treatment of LB
