The first identified case of human Neoehrlichia mikurensis infection in Finland
Neoehrlichia mikurensis is a tick-borne bacterium that causes the infectious disease neoehrlichiosis, primarily in Europe and northern Asia. It circulates in an enzootic cycle involving ticks and wild rodents. First identified as a human pathogen in Sweden in 2010, neoehrlichiosis has since been reported across Europe and parts of Asia, mainly affecting immunocompromised individuals with symptoms such as fever and vascular complications. Though difficult to culture, diagnosis relies on PCR-based methods. While present in Finnish ticks, no human cases have been reported in Finland until recently.
