The Clinical Eye of the Year (Vuoden Kliininen Silmä) 2024
The Clinical Eye (Kliininen silmä) -award was given to infectious diseases special Ulla Hohenthal and professor Jukka Hytönen for the identification of the first neoehrlichiosis patient in Finland!
The laboratory finding and clinical diagnosis of Finland’s first neoehrlichiosis patient exemplified collaboration between laboratory clinicians and treating physicians. It was a situation where a research- and development-oriented clinical laboratory initiated the creation of a diagnostic test it anticipated would be useful, communicated about it to clinicians treating patients, ensured awareness of the new diagnostic capability, and identified patients who could benefit from the test,” the award citation noted.
Professor Jukka Hytönen is an internationally recognized researcher of tick-borne diseases, particularly Lyme borreliosis, who has actively brought the latest advancements in his field into clinical laboratory diagnostics for years.
Adjunct Professor Ulla Hohenthal is an experienced infectious disease clinician who diagnosed Finland’s first neoehrlichiosis patient. Within her workplace, she is known as a seasoned infectious disease physician who serves as a role model, consistently mentoring younger colleagues and students.
The Clinical Eye of the Year is awarded annually in recognition of particularly successful diagnostic, therapeutic, or administrative achievements or ingenious inventions.
