For citizen scientist

The role of citizen scientists as members of the citizen research panel is to act as partners to researchers. Their tasks vary depending on the research project and its requirements, but the main principle is active participation and influence over the research process.

Each member of the panel may be involved in multiple tasks. All panelists undergo an online training before joining the panel.

The Beginner’s Guide by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies is a great starting point for anyone interested in citizen science.

Who can join the panel?

If you are interested in science and research, curious to learn new things, or eager to try out new ideas, you are the person we are looking for! The most important requirement for joining the citizen research panel is your own interest.

Panelists choose for themselves which tasks they wish to participate in. Joining the panel does not obligate you to take part in all tasks.

To join the panel, you must be at least 15 years old and reside in the operational area of the University of Turku, which includes Southwest Finland or Satakunta. Currently, the citizen research panel operates only in Finnish.

No prior knowledge or skills are required to join the citizen research panel. Training for the tasks will be provided, and you can read more about it here.

How can I get involved?

Registration for participants in the citizen research panel is now open! You can visit this page to get detailed information about the panel activities through online training, after which you can choose to join the panel. The training for citizens is only available in Finnish.

The panel will be operational, meaning it will process researchers’ task invitations, by October 2025 at the latest.

A short online training package is being prepared for those interested in joining the panel. This orientation can be completed independently at any time that suits you. The training includes video and text materials and takes approximately one hour to complete.

You can access the training here.

The training ensures that all participants have the basic knowledge and skills needed to engage in the panel. It covers topics such as the goals of the panel, how it operates, and why the contributions of participants are valuable. Additionally, the training introduces the panel’s practical online working methods and provides participants with the necessary information to take part. This ensures equal knowledge for everyone, regardless of background or prior experience.

The training supports the smooth functioning of the panel and promotes equitable participation. Time invested in the training makes participation in the panel more effective and enjoyable for everyone, while also enhancing the quality of the research.
