Professor Kirsi Salonen receives major recognition as a scholar

TUCEMEMS warmly congratulates its long-standing member of the Board and former Director on her great recognition as a scholar of the Middle Ages and the Papal Curia! CONGRATULATIONS!

Professor Kirsi Salonen, former TUCEMEMS Director and current member of the Board, has been invited to become a Fellow of the prestigious British Academy. Salonen has years of experience as a researcher in the Vatican archives. Since 1996, she has conducted pioneering research on church history and legal history in the archives of both the Penitentiary and Sacra Romana Rota. In addition to the activities of these papal offices, Salonen’s research has shed extensive light on the contacts of Swedes and Finns with Rome in the late Middle Ages. Kirsi Salonen is currently Professor of Medieval History at the University of Bergen, where she heads the research group “Medieval History – religion and everyday life”. She also leads the SCISMA research project at the University of Turku, funded by the Academy of Finland.

This year, The British Academy appointed 86 new Fellows. 30 of them come from international institutions. The prestigious invitation to join the Academy has been rare for northerners; Kirsi Salonen is perhaps the first Finnish historian in a tradition of nominations that began in 1902.
