A Postdoctoral Researcher in Learning Technology and Design for Smart EU Shipbuilding Project

A Postdoctoral Researcher in  Learning Technology and Design to join the research group of the Turku Design Studio      

We are looking for a fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of Learning Technology and Design to join the research group of the Turku Design Studio (utu.fi/tds) led by Professor Yong Se Kim. The position is located at the unit of Mechanical Engineering. The research tasks are for the “Smart European Shipbuilding (SEUS)”, an EU-Horizon project at (http://seus-project.eu/). The objective of the SEUS project is to create a framework for European shipyards by architecting and developing an integrated platform for data-driven shipbuilding, with a focus on human-centricity, smart technology, digitalization, and cyber-physical systems, to improve efficiency, reduce engineering time, and provide a competitive advantage through cost- and time-saving innovations. The University of Turku is conducting Work Package 5 which addresses (1) human-centric representation and management of shipbuilding activities, (2) an AI-based document intelligence, (3) knowledge management and (4) workforce skill development including training.

The postdoctoral researcher position will conduct research primarily in learning technology-based skill development and training for shipbuilding. This position will start as early as 1st of June, 2024 or upon mutual agreement and the duration is for 18 months. Major tasks would include: Customized learning support for continued learning of shipbuilding experts of shipyards and ship design companies with effective monitoring of learning and knowledge transfer at both skill and meta-level training and learning. Provision of proper reflection opportunities in customized manners considering learners, topical characteristics, training and learning channel issues, etc. Contribution in human-centric shipbuilding competitiveness model to be used in training and skill development and in overall assessment of human-centric competency. Collaboration with researchers in the Turku Design Studio will be significantly involved. Other research efforts at the Turku Design Studio include smart service design for self-service restaurants and sustainable experience design.

Requirements:

The candidate is required to have significant learning technology background with a PhD in education, information technology, design, engineering or a related field. It is desirable that the candidate will have interests in design learning and informatics and knowledge management with human-centric issues as in cognitive science or learning science. It is desirable that the candidate has already acquired research experience as an independent researcher in learning technology or related field.

The qualification requirements of the position are stated in the University of Turku rules of Procedure. Person selected for the post of Postdoctoral Researcher are required to have a PhD degree. The degree must be completed before the application period ends.

Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required in the position.

Salary details:

The salaries are determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel (YPJ) when negotiating the employment contract. For a postdoctoral researcher, the salary is at levels 5-6 on the job demands chart where task specific salary component is between 3 213,55 – 3 747,44 eur/month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal work performance component is 6%–50% of the task specific salary component. For a postdoctoral researcher the salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experiences based on the University salary system and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 3600 – 4200 €/month.

The trial period of six (6) months for the postdoctoral researcher.
