Research Title: Lawful but Awful: Evaluating the Impact of Artisanal Gold Mining on Tropical Biodiversity
This study investigates the devastating impacts of unregulated small-scale gold mining on tropical ecosystems, their biodiversity and on local livelihoods. It advocates a multi-stakeholder approach to regulating artisanal gold mining that balance economic needs with ecosystem conservation in mining-affected regions of West Africa and the Amazon.
Research Title: Diverse Values of nature in urban green infrastructure planning of Lilongwe City, Malawi: Towards sustainable and just African cities
In pursuit of just and sustainable cities, nature is increasingly recognized as an essential component for urban well-being, yet it is rapidly disappearing, a trend particularly evident in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this study, I apply the value-centered approach proposed by IPBES, through the lens of a just and sustainable city, to support the promotion of nature and biodiversity in African urban areas, with Lilongwe City, Malawi, as a case study. In this presentation, I will focus on Objective 1: To examine the diverse values and disvalues of nature held by Lilongwe City inhabitants, and how these are distributed across space.
