Turku Alzheimer Imaging

Our research investigates early risk factors (both genetic and life-style related) of memory disorders and especially Alzheimer´s Disease (AD).

We are specialized in combining multimodal neuroimaging, plasma biomarkers of AD and cognitive testing to explore how the early cerebral changes of memory disorders associate with each other at different stages of the disease.

We utilize positron emission tomography (PET) to examine for example brain beta-amyloid load, activated microglia and synaptic density. Magnetic resonance imaging is used to evaluate regional brain volumes, white matter tracts and vascular lesions.

We collaborate with the local AURIA biobank, which enables recruiting study participants according to a specific risk genotype for Alzheimer´s disease.

We also collaborate with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare to recruit individuals with midlife metabolic risk factors and thus possibly at an increased risk for late-life dementia.
