Paper published! Are protected areas avoiding deforestation and carbon emission?
“Impact of individual protected areas on deforestation and carbon emissions in Acre, Brazil”, published in Environmental Conservation, uses an innovative method to estimate the avoided deforestation and CO2 emissions in protected areas. This is done by comparing the deforestation in areas with similar conditions, but that are not protected.
The authors found that, mostly, protected areas helped to avoid substantial amounts of emissions.
