Paper published! What monkeys and ferns have to do with each other?
“Characterizing primate home‐ranges in Amazonia: Using ferns and lycophytes as indicators of site quality” has just come out in Biotropica
The paper was led by the Amazon team member Dr. Glanda Cárdenas with Dr. Mirkka Jones, Dr. Eckhard W. Heymann and Dr. Hanna Tuomisto.
For many years, groups of Tamarin monkeys were tracked and their home-ranges were determined and correlated with soil nutrient concentration estimated using ferns as soil indicators in Peruvian Amazonia.
The authors found that soils in the study area were relatively cation‐poor, which probably translates into low primary productivity. Some differences in soils among the home‐ranges of three tamarin groups were also observed, illustrating the usefulness of the method for detailed habitat mapping.

Congratulation Glenda and all!
