Information about Turku

Turku is a coastal city of 192,000 inhabitants, located in South-Western Finland, about 170km to the west of Helsinki. Founded around 1300, it is the oldest town in the country and also Finland’s most important city throughout the period of Swedish rule (c.1150–1809), after which the capital was moved to Helsinki.

The center of Turku is divided in two by the Aurajoki River, which also provides a scenic setting for the old town. There are two medieval buildings still standing, Turku Cathedral and Turku Castle, the latter being the most significant individual tourist location in Turku. In addition to the castle, there are several other museums in Turku, including Forum Marinum for maritime heritage, Turku Art Museum, and the Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum, which hosts both contemporary art and medieval ruins in situ.
