Pyry Toivonen

BGG steering committee representative of Biology

Department: biology

Pyry studies multispecies interactions between lynx, wolves and deer. His thesis includes population modelling, isotope analysis and GPS-tracking. He prefers Bayesian statistics and is eager to spread the news about bayesian revolution, so don’t be afraid to reach out for questions regarding it! Pyry is also the chair person of BRIDGE, so his tasks include summoning and chairing monthly BRIDGE meetings and overseeing the general activities of BRIDGE. He is also a representative of BGG researchers in the BGG steering committee.

Emilia Mäkinen

Emilia works on plant-microbe adaptations to polar light regimes in her thesis titled ”Adapting to the extreme light environment of high latitudes: phenology and bacterial associations of the Antarctic hair grass”. Reach out if you want to discuss plants or need help with R/statistics – she doesn’t bite!
In BRIDGE, Emilia acts as a board member and is the organizer behind the Peer Support Group, where BGG students are free to discuss the struggles of PhD studies and offer advice to others in a safe environment.

Leonie Jonas

Department: biology

In her thesis Leonie studies responses of European birds to climate change and the effects of conservation using large-scale datasets and different methods such as species distribution models with the aim to support policy makers and protected area managers in adapting bird conservation strategies to climate change. In BRIDGE Leonie acts as a board member to help with whatever is needed.
