15.11.–16.11.2024 The project members present their research in the Drawing Connections: Comics as Art and Inquiry symposium at Malmö University. As part of their visit, they also get the chance to explore the Swedish Comics Archive.
18.9.2024 The project’s inaugural seminar Cultures of Image and Word: Perspectives on the Histories of Comics and Children’s Literature at University of Turku, Publicum, Pub 209, Assistentinkatu 7, Turku. The symposium is open for public. The detailed program can be found here.
18.6.–19.6.2024 The project members present their research in the Comics and Norm-Critical Perspectives symposium at Linköping University.
12.6.2024 Ralf Kauranen participates in the online workshop Transmediating Authorship: Tove Jansson and Astrid Lindgren with the talk “Tove Jansson’s comics: metanarration and play on the borders”. The workshop is organized by Linnaeus University Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies (IMS) and the Centre for Childhood Research in Literature, Language and Learning (CHILLL).
23.5.–24.5.2024 Leena Romu and Anna Vuorinne host the workgroup “Diversity in the past and present of Finnish comics” in the Finnish Literary Research Society’s annual conference in Jyväskylä. Call for papers is still open until March 28!
17.5.2024 Panel discussion on the history and present of Finnish queer comics in Turku Main Library’s Studio auditorium. Panelists include Jesse Ghost, H-P Lehkonen, Annukka Leppänen, Johanna “Roju” Rojola, and Anna Vuorinne.
16.5.2024 Anna Vuorinne presents her research in the opening seminar of the Critical Sexualities Research Network CRISSE.
3.5.–30.5.2024 The exhibition Defiance and Utopia: Finnish Queer Comics Across Decades in Turku Main Library (the lobby and the section for nonfiction). The exhibition is organised in cooperation with the project Trans*Creative: Health, Violence, and Environment in Trans Cultural Production and comics artist H-P Ontto-Panula (Lehkonen).
2.–3.5.2024 Leena Romu presents their research with Anna Vuorinne in the annual Gender Studies Conference, Tampere University.
12.4.2024 Ralf Kauranen participates in the Sarjakuvan paikka seminar in the Finnish Literature Society. His talk has the title “Sarjakuvatyöläisyydestä: Suomalaisen sarjakuvakentän rakenteista Ville Rannan uran valossa”.
13.10.2023 Ralf Kauranen presents the project in his talk “Att skriva seriehistoria ur minoritetsperspektiv – ett synliggörande bortom kanon” (Writing comics history from a minority perspective: visibility beyond canons” at the seminar För en större litteratur: låt litteraturhistorien växa (For a broader literature: let literary history grow) organised by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS). The Swedish-language seminar can be watched on SLS’s YouTube-channel.
1.10.2023 Anna Vuorinne and Ralf Kauranen talk about the project at the Turku Book Fair. They are interviewed by Riitta Monto, Professor of Practice, Faculty of Humanities, University of Turku.
