Student Compass | Research group for innovating democracy

In spring 2026 we invited students at the University of Turku to join the Student Compass, a study examining students’ views on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education. Results will be used in research on democracy and in developing the University’s AI guidelines.

The Student Compass brought together undergraduate students at the University of Turku to reflect on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education. Results will be used in democracy research and in developing the University’s AI guidelines. The study was conducted by political science researchers at the University of Turku as part of the European Research Council funded ADDI research project.

Participating in the study involved an approximately two-hour small-group discussion held remotely via Zoom, as well as completing research surveys. The small-group discussions were conducted between 7 and 16 April 2026. Discussions were held in Finnish and English. Participants were paid a compensation of 80 euros, which required attending the small-group discussion and completing all of the research surveys.

During the small-group discussion, participants were provided with background information on the topic, had the opportunity to share their experiences, and, together with other students, formed considered views and recommendations.

Participation did not require any prior knowledge. Nor did it matter whether participants viewed developments in AI critically or positively, different opinions were welcome. What mattered most was a willingness to listen to others, share one’s own experiences, and take part in a constructive discussion. The discussion was facilitated by a trained moderator.

All undergraduate students at the University of Turku were able to register for the study. Participation required a valid UTU user account.

Approximately 400 students were selected for the Student Barometer to represent the different faculties. All research materials are treated confidentially.
