Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO)

The Participation in Long-Term Decision-Making (PALO) project examined the problem of short-termism in public decision-making. The project sought solutions to reduce short-termism and to take future generations into account in democratic decision-making. The project was carried out in 2017–2022 by the University of Turku and Tampere University, Åbo Akademi University, and the Natural Resources Institute Finland. The research was funded by the Strategic Research Council, which operates in connection with the Academy of Finland.

Within the project, researchers at the University of Turku conducted several experiments in citizen participation, including the Mustasaari citizens’ jury on the municipal merger issue.
