Survey about well-being of foreign students at Finnish universities

Survey about well-being of non-Finnish students

Thank you for your interest in our research!

The purpose of the research is to investigate the experiences of non-Finnish students at Finnish universities, regarding their own well-being. We are also studying what sort of remote study practices are implemented at various universities and how they affect well-being. You are eligible to participate if you are non-Finnish person currently studying, or you have studied at some point during 2024, at a Finnish university and are at least 18 years old. If you are a Finnish person, there is another survey available for you.

The survey includes background questions, questions related to studying, and questions about well-being and its challenges, such as burnout and feelings of anxiety. Completing the survey takes around 20 minutes.

Information on the research

The goal of the research is to understand how students who are studying at Finnish universities are doing and what aspects of university teaching methods affect their well-being. The results will be used to write scientific articles and may also be used to improve university teaching practices. This survey is for non-Finnish students but there will also be a survey for Finnish students.

Participation in the study is voluntary. You can refuse to participate or withdraw from the study after starting it without any consequences. If you withdraw from the study, your responses collected up to that point will not be used as part of the research data. If you complete the survey, your responses will become part of the research data and cannot be removed afterward. This is because the survey is answered anonymously, meaning the researchers will not know who the respondent is and therefore cannot remove individual responses from the data afterward.

There is no direct benefit or harm to the participant from participating in the study, and no compensation is provided for participation. However, the responses will contribute to the research on student well-being. This research advances scientific understanding of students’ well-being experiences and can also be practically utilized in the development of university teaching.

The study does not collect direct personal data such as names or email addresses. The survey collects information such as the respondent’s gender, age, and place of study, and by combining this information, it might be possible to identify some respondents. However, the information obtained in the study is confidential, and the results are reported in such a way that it is impossible to distinguish individual respondents answers from the results. The goal of the study is to collect about 2000 responses. Several scientific publications will be written based on the results.

The research data will be stored and processed at the University of Turku. The data may be shared for research purposes with other universities or research institutions in a form that does not allow individual respondents to be identified.

The collected data will be processed in accordance with data protection regulations, and more information is available in the research’s data protection statement.

The study is conducted and funded by the Department of Psychology at the University of Turku, and the responsible person for the research is Senior Researcher in Psychology, Nils Sandman. You can ask him for additional information about the research via email at: nils.sandman@utu.fi
