On Wednesday, September 17, the seminar Historical Mobility and Contacts of Finns was held at the University of Turku in collaboration with the HISCOM research group from the University of Helsinki and the Human Diversity consortium at the University of Turku. Both groups presented their research and materials related to the topic.
HISCOM’s presentation took the audience along historical routes and discussed changes and regional differences in road networks as well as their relationship to local communities. HISCOM’s research was presented by Prof. Anu Lahtinen, Docent Eljas Oksanen, BA Ragna Moshagen, MA Ari Vesalainen, PhD Ville-Pekka Kääriäinen, and undergraduate student Sanni Kanervo.
Human Diversity presented research and materials on the linguistic, cultural, and genetic contacts of Finns, as well as on migrations during the pre-industrial era and diseases that spread through contacts. Human Diversity’s research was presented by Prof. Virpi Lummaa, Associate Prof. Outi Vesakoski, Associate Prof. Elina Salmela, Associate Prof. Mirkka Lahdenperä, PhD Jenna Kanerva, PhD Jenni Santaharju, and Docent Ulla Nordfors.
