KOKORA 2025-2027

Encounters at the Boundaries of Home

The name of the project in Finnish is Kohtaamisia kodin rajoilla, abbreviated as KOKORA.

The KOKORA project delves into the everyday life of housing estates by examining the boundaries of home. By the boundaries of home, we refer to areas where the line between the private and public is blurred. The project is interdisciplinary and involves researchers from the University of Turku as well as Åbo Akademi.

How do individuals experience encounters in the boundary spaces between the public and private? To what extent do these interactions foster communication and a sense of community? The boundary spaces often generate negotiations and even conflicts, intertwined with questions of power, responsibilities, and rights. The research is situated in Turku, specifically in Runosmäki, Halinen, Skanssi, and the Harppunakortteli in Linnakaupunki.

The research method employed is sensory ethnography, involving interviews and observations focused on residents’ sensory perceptions and experiences. At the start of the project, we will conduct a survey aimed at reaching out to residents for interviews.

How to participate?

The research data will be stored in the archives of the Department of History, Culture, and Arts Studies. The project will also be integrated into the teaching of museology, ethnology, and language studies.

The research project is funded by Länsi-Suomen Yleishyödyllinen Asuntosäätiö, which supports research and development in social housing production, among other things.
