Work Packages

WP1 – Visionary and Anticipatory Excellence

The work package involves scanning the operational environment and future horizons of the life sciences industry, particularly life science manufacturing, to understand the current state and potential future changes that could impact the industry in Finland. In addition, It aims to investigate emerging technologies that could radically change life science manufacturing conditions in the 2030s and beyond, using futures research methods and benchmarking companies from other industries. Insights from the scanning process will be used to construct a joint Future Factory Concept, representing the consortium’s vision for the future of life science manufacturing in Finland.

This concept will serve as input for WP2 and WP3, with results from these work packages feeding back into WP1 for concept revision towards the project’s end. Additionally, the project will implement measures to help organizations become more attuned to future changes and take a proactive role in shaping the future, fostering visionary leadership within their networks.

WP2 – Life Science Manufacturing Excellence

The work package focuses on the operational environment of life science manufacturing and its relationship with business goals, with the objective of identifying and developing optimal technologies and processes for sustainable and agile manufacturing in the pharmaceutical sector.

The objective of this work package is to identify potential avenues for business development through an enhanced comprehension of the operational environment and the integration of sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, including the implementation of circular production. Moreover, WP2 encompasses the assessment of AI/ML tools for pharmaceutical process development, as well as their appraisal for quality assurance and predictive analytics. In this way, WP2 offers insights to WP3 for technology research.Change management is explored in the context of adoption of new technologies.

The work package Life Science Manufacturing Excellence facilitates the availability of high-quality products through sustainable operational practices and the utilisation of advanced digital technologies. This will expand the global market reach and competitiveness of life science and pharmaceutical manufacture.

WP3 – Technology Excellence

WP3 focuses on advancing software engineering, artificial intelligence and cutting-edge digital solutions to support the Future Factory concept. Leveraging insights from WP1 and WP2, this work package explores machine learning applications tailored for the life sciences industry, with a focus on innovation in highly regulated environments. Agile development methodology will guide this research to ensure adaptability and impact.

Focal areas include assessing the state of the art in data architecture in the life sciences industry, then exploring the development cycle of RegOps practices in the value network. There will also be a special focus on the verification of novel application areas, such as AI-enabled processes, and their traceability.

WP3 complements its approach by focusing on research related to solutions to support life sciences manufacturing functions, with objectives such as optimising processes and preventing problems in production. The WP will build a proof-of-concept solution for research in a testbed environment, with a particular focus on regulatory requirements.

WP4 – Project Management and Dissemination

The primary aim of WP4 is to prepare, lead and coordinate the project to achieve the defined goals. The secondary aim is to disseminate information about the project to internal and external stakeholders of the project and to a broader audience of policymakers, industry professionals, and academics. The third aim is to ensure continuity beyond the lifetime of the project, for example by establishing rooted network collaborations among partners and by facilitating additional international project applications.
