Doctoral school
Knowledge and skills in academia and beyond
Doctoral education is undergoing significant changes in Finland. The introduction of a new doctoral pilot, revised degree requirements, and a growing focus on societal impact are transforming the knowledge and skills expected of doctoral graduates. Moreover, with the rising number of doctors in Finland, it is more and more likely that doctors will seek career opportunities beyond academia. What does this process entail for future doctors in a knowledge-based society?
Against this development, we invite Doctoral Researchers in Geography to reflect upon the various knowledge and skills needed in order to navigate work life within academia and beyond. The day takes a future-oriented perspective to work and powerful knowledge inherent in Geography. The day further involves a workshop focused on the roles and competences that researchers could attain as they interact with society and aim to create impact through their research. The workshop takes advantage of the freshly published “Researchers Handbook” by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, providing participants the opportunity to make their own interaction plan.
The day will conclude with a student mixer event, where current UTU master’s students can meet and greet doctoral researchers to discuss their ongoing research in the exciting field of geography.
