Materials Physics Group at UTU
Materials Physics is the second group that belongs to Materials Research Laboratory led by Prof. Edwin Kukk at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Turku. Prof. Pekka Laukkanen is a head of Materials Physics group which is making both computational and experimental research in the area of traditional semiconductor solids such as Si, Ge, SiC, and III-V compounds. Expertise of the group is based on two areas: (1) simulations of semiconductor properties starting from detailed atomic and electronic structures until macroscopic electrical phenomena and (2) surface physics experiments which are extended toward the research of semiconductor interfaces, in particular, those at oxide-semiconductor and metal-semiconductor junctions. These interfaces affect significantly the operation of practical semiconductor devices, chips because defect-rich semiconductor surface areas are one of the weakest parts in many devices, decreasing their energy efficiency, durability, and manufacturing yield.
General goal in research of the group is to advance atomic-level understanding and engineering of the semiconductor interfaces that play a key role in the current semiconductor industry.
