“Archaeologist for a day”

Viken County Council

Children work together with archaeologists to find material from the Viking age to the 18th century in the soil from the excavation site of Labo in Son, using real archaeological methods. As an archaeologist for a day, the students will learn about the objects, the history of Labo and Son, and how Son was connected to Europe through commerce and timber trade. The programme has been operational for 10 years.

Archaeology of Son and Labo

Viken County Council

Son is located by the Oslo fjord, in the southern part of Viken. The city square was excavated in the period 2011-2013. We know that Son was an important harbor for trading timber with Europe from 16th to  18th century. Dutch ships brought timber from Son to Europe, and imported goods back to Son.
The material from the Son harbor must be seen in correlation to another excavation site just northeast of Son – called the Labo-site. We think that Labo has been an Inn for traders doing commerce in Son. The material from Son and Labo has been widely used in public outreach – resulting in books, exhibitions, guided tours, lectures, and the school program Archaeologist for a day.
