About NEEN
NEEN, the Nordic Environmental Ethics Network, is a is a forum for discussion where we can develop Nordic environmental philosophies, discuss Nordic environmental problems and solutions, and network with Nordic colleagues. NEEN is nomadic – we meet all around the region, and we meet online. It is open to everyone who wishes to share their work and ideas with Nordic colleagues working in the field of environmental ethics.
NEEN is coordinated and founded by Linnea Luuppala, Mikko Puumala, Lars Samuelsson, and Anne Sauka. It has found its home in the philosophy unit of University of Turku, in collaboration with Helena Siipi. NEEN has no official membership, but instead it carries out basic functions that help to facilitate research collaboration and networking with colleagues. These include organizing an online research seminar, an annual or biannual conference, and maintaining this website as well as a mailing list. NEEN makes it easier to share news about events and opportunities related to environmental ethics, discuss research with colleagues in the region, and finding people with similar research interests.
NEEN’s roots are in the Nordic Summer Summer (NSU), where Teea Kortetmäki and Mikko Puumala coordinated a Nordic Environmental Ethics study circle (2021–2023), followed by a Sustainability, Ethics, and the Environment study circle (2024), coordinated by Linnea Luuppala, Anne Sauka, and Mikko Puumala. During 2021–2024, these study circles gathered in eight NSU events that brought together colleagues in environmental ethics from the Nordic and Baltic region, and also from Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, UK, USA, and Ukraine. The aim of these study circles was to create a permanent research network, and finally, NEEN was established in January 2024 in Umeå, Sweden, during the latter study circle’s Winter Symposium.
