Plastlife-Sustainable Circular Economy of Plastics
The geographical focus in the project is to study the spatial and locational aspects of circular economy, plastic value chain and sustainable business models. Empirical focus is on the plastics materials used in crop farming and horticulture, and the potential to transfer these materials from waste(s) to recyclable raw materials. Together with other research and industrial partners, we study the sustainable use and recyclability of the plastic materials, their suitability to different end-use options and products, and possibilities to replace plastics with other materials and/or farming practices. We valorize the plastic value chain in order to identify bottlenecks of material recovery and recycling. In collaborative workshops we discuss with different plastic value chain actors business models based on circular economy principles to enhance plastic collection, reprocessing, and also utilization of recycled plastic materials.
The sub-project “Promotion of the recycling of agro-plastics; re-designing the value chain” is a part of national collaboration project PlastLIFE, which is focusing on sustainable circular economy of plastics in Finland. PlastLIFE is coordinated by Finnish Environment Institute SYKE and Ministry of the Environment.
The sub-project is located in the Department of Geography and Geology at the University of Turku, and is financed by the EU LIFE programme, Keskitie and ProAgria Farma Foundations and by Svenska lantbruksproducenternas centralförbund SLC r.f.
