Have you seen or heard a stories of porpoises? We are interested in all kinds of observations, memories and stories about porpoises.

The “Memories of Porpoises” project works closely with the Ministry of the Environment and Turku University of Applied Sciences responsible for the conservation and monitoring of the Baltic porpoises. The project also works as part of the Disappeared, Endangered and Newly Arrived Species: The Human Relationship with the Changing Biodiversity of the Baltic Sea (HumBio), funded by the Academy of Finland from 2021 to 2025. The “Memories of Porpoises” project is conducted at the School of History, Culture and Art Studies of the University of Turku. The project is funded by the Weisell Foundation (http://www.weisell.fi/)

We are looking for people who have memories or knowledge of porpoises in the Finnish sea region in the first half of the 20th century. We would also be happy to interview people who have seen/encountered porpoises in the wild.

We also hope to receive responses to our online survey on porpoise memories, which can be found here: https://link.webropolsurveys.com/S/D1352E50D1E19A97 (The questionnaire can only be answered in Finnish and Swedish). You can register to be interviewed via the survey or send an e-mail to nmmkal[at]utu.fi.
