Conference: Administration in Times of Crisis
The project SCISMA organises an international conference in Rome in collaboration with DHI Rome and the University of Bergen.
Administration in Times of Crisis: The Roman Papacy in the Great Western Schism
The Great Western Schism (1378–1417) is considered as the deepest crisis of the late medieval Church. It had devastating effects upon the administration of the Catholic Church. After the election of “Antipope” Clement VII, most of the competent curial staff joined the French Pope, and the Roman Pope Urban VI had to recreate the administration. But was the Roman side really in deep trouble?
This conference aims to enhance the study of the late medieval Roman papacy and to shed light upon the history of the papal administration in Rome in the times of crisis: How did it regain its functions? Who were the central persons involved in the recreation of the Roman curia? Were there material and artistic consequences in the production of the papal institutions? What was the impact of the Roman popes in the territories under their obedience?
Online participation possible. Please see the details and register here.
