Smart Systems takes part in two doctoral education pilots

This week, the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture (Opetus-ja kulttuuriministeriö) announced the projects selected for the new Doctoral Education Pilots. In total, 15 pilots for field-specific doctoral education and Smart Systems takes part in two of them:

  • Digital Waters Doctoral Education Pilot pioneers the transition towards digital representation of real-world water systems, known as Digital Twin technology. From hydrological storages to ecosystem responses, our aim is to train tools to support analysis, planning, and governance in water resources. DIWA Pilot is led by Prof. Björn Klöve from the University of Oulu. At the University of Turku, several researchers are actively involved in this endeavor, including Prof. Petteri Alho (Coordinator at UTU), Prof. Tomi Westerlund, Prof. Jukka Heikkonen, Prof. Juha Plosila, Assoc. Prof. Wallace Moreira Bessa (Smart Systems) and others.
  • Intelligent Work Machines Pilot strives to educate upcoming professionals up to the doctoral level, equipping them with the necessary multidisciplinary engineering knowledge for developing intelligent machinery. Intelligent Work Machines, including those used in mining, forestry, agriculture, and logistics, play a crucial role in the Finnish industry. Machines and vehicles alone contribute over 25% (15 billion €/yr) to Finnish exports, solidifying their importance. IWM Pilot is led by Prof. Matti Vilkko from Tampere University. At the University of Turku, activities are coordinated by Assoc. Prof. Wallace Moreira Bessa (Smart Systems).

Universities receive additional funding for training a thousand new doctoral graduates
